6 Ways To Serve at Mercer

Did you know that two out of three students participate in a service-learning experience while they’re at Mercer?! Here are six easy ways you can serve on campus…

1. Take a service-learning course.

Each semester, a variety of courses are offered that include a service-learning component, from the health sciences to the social sciences, business, education, and more.

2. Help out in the neighborhood.

Mercer Bears strive to be the best neighbors in Macon. Our students have led projects to clean up a cemetery, start a community garden, tutor in local elementary schools, and more.

3. Join MerServe.

A student-led service-leadership board, MerServe lets our students take ownership of service and community engagement projects. Some of their events include Service Saturdays and Be a Good NeighBEAR.

Service Saturdays

Whether working at a local food bank, cleaning up a neighborhood, or helping with a housing project, our monthly Service Saturdays provide great opportunities to give back.

Be a Good NeighBEAR

Mercer’s biggest service day of the year, Be a Good NeighBEAR is organized by students and mobilizes upwards of 800 volunteers to work on service projects all around Macon!

4. Volunteer with kids.

Tutor

Help children in the community by tutoring at a local elementary school.

Attend ‘Lights On Afterschool’

Organize activities during an after-school festival for Macon-Bibb County students.

5. Go on a Mercer On Mission trip.

Want your life to change forever? Mercer On Mission sends students around the world for a one-of-a-kind study-abroad and service-learning experience that transforms the lives of students as well as those they serve.

6. Create your own way to serve.

At Mercer, you’re definitely not limited to these opportunities! Our students are constantly thinking of new and different ways to serve.

Take Shane Buerster, for example. During a Mercer On Mission trip to Ecuador, Shane discovered a unique way he could help some of the people he met. In September 2017, he founded Z Beans Coffee to connect impoverished farmers in the regions of El Oro and Loja, Ecuador, to consumers in the United States.
