Hello, future Bears! My name is Chance Allen, and I’m a sophomore majoring in journalism. I get bored very easily, so I’ve involved myself in various things around campus: African Student Association, Mercer Admissions Special Events Team, and America Reads America Counts—a tutoring program for elementary students. Many first-year students may struggle to find their niche. However, at Mercer, there’s a space for everyone—and I mean everyone— to get involved. Here are 7 different ways for you to get involved on campus!
Start simple by volunteering at
From basketball to ballroom dancing, Mercer provides the best (and the most fun) ways to be active. You can get involved with intramural or club sports like club baseball or intramural kickball. And if you’re not an athletic person (like me), you can cheer on your favorite athletic teams with Mercer Maniacs! Go ahead and mark your calendar for the first home football game of the season on September 14. #GOBEARS
Academic involvement is strongly encouraged on campus, and there are lots of options, including Mercer Math Club, National Society of Black Engineers, Spanish Club, and much more. These kinds of organizations are good if you want to keep up an old interest, explore a new topic, or make friends.
4. Pre-Professional Groups
Calling all my “Pre-” homies! Where y’all at? Are you Pre-Med? Pre-Law? Pre-anything? Join a society or association in your specific pre-professional track so that you can make the most of your opportunities at Mercer. The Pre-Law Society, Pre-Physician Assistant Association, Pre-PT Club ( and more) are amazing ways to meet others within your particular field of study and some all-time prime friends!
5. Religious Life
If you are a religious person, there’s always a place for you at Mercer, regardless of your specific faith. From the Muslim Student Association to Delight Ministries, Wesley Foundation, and so much more, there are many ways to stay connected to your religion with our faith-based organizations on campus.
Who doesn’t love fun things? Or FREE T-shirts? I know one thing for sure—you’ll never get bored on campus. Our on-campus activity planning board, QuadWorks, throws a TON of events on a daily basis for you and your friends to enjoy! Not to mention the other events put on by individual clubs and organizations. It’s always booming on campus!
7. Special Interests
Just like high school, there’s an abundance of clubs that cater to your special interests and skill sets. There’s Mercer Gaming Club, Mercer Vegan Club, and Mercer Film Society just to name a few. In addition, never forget that you can always bring something new to the table. If there’s an interest you have, find some other students around campus with the same interest and start a new organization together.
The best way to get plugged in, sign up for a few campus organizations, and meet new people is to attend Bear Fair.
